- ➤ Atascadero Chamber Oktoberfest ran Thursday at Lakeside Park while the Cayucos Antiques Street Fair will run Sunday on Ocean Avenue, and the Reptile Expo at the Madonna Inn is planned for Saturday and Sunday; the Clam Festival in Pismo Beach, Central Coast Airfest in Santa Maria, and the Santa Barbara Harbor & Seafood Festival on Saturday add more events for the weekend—offering food, music, and fun for families across the Central Coast. - ➤ The Paso Robles and Templeton Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Christmas Tree Auction and Awards Ceremony at Springhill Suites today to honor a Templeton Citizen of the Year and a Templeton Business of the Year with decorated trees donating gifts and experiences that benefit local nonprofits — the event will also offer a catered dinner and live entertainment — inviting community members to submit nominations for future awards. - ➤ Nightmare From Main Street, a volunteer nonprofit haunted house, returns for its 15th year today at 828 14th St. in downtown Paso Robles—offering free daytime tours for children and parents while evening tours run with $20 standard or $30 VIP admissions through early November, including a total darkness tour on Nov. 1. - ➤ On November 8 the San Antonio Valley Historical Association will present 'The Salinan Indian Culture of Monterey County' at the San Antonio Valley Community Center with Michael Erin Woody from the Salinan Tribe sharing his insight—appetizers start at 5:30 p.m., dinner follows at 6 p.m., and reservations are required by Oct. 30 with admission at $35 for members and $40 for nonmembers. - ➤ Six panelists and a moderator shared their college experiences at the annual State of Latinx event held Wednesday at Chumash Auditorium, where they discussed culture, belonging and the need for better campus representation. Organizer Jeremiah Hernandez said the event showed that despite Cal Poly’s Hispanic-serving status, many Latino students feel that voices of color are missing from key decision-making spaces — a concern the panelists stressed throughout the discussion. - ➤ The Paso Robles Community Emergency Response Team will offer a 24-hour CERT Basic Training Course for residents 15 and older to learn disaster preparedness, first aid, fire fighting, search and rescue, and disaster psychology. Classes will be held at the Paso Robles Public Safety Center (900 Park St.) on Oct 28, Oct 30, Nov 4, and Nov 6 from 6 to 9 p.m., with a final review and exercise on Nov 8 from 9 a.m. to about 5 p.m. at Fire Station 3 (2924 Union Rd.) for a $40 fee to earn a certificate. - ➤ Cal Fire SLO, Cal Poly, and California State Parks conducted a prescribed burn at Cal Poly’s Escuela Ranch (burning 30 acres) to improve fire safety, restore ecosystem health, and give students hands-on wildfire training as part of a vegetation management plan. Mustang News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that adds 10 new liquor licenses in San Luis Obispo County, with five licenses coming next year and five set for 2027. The changes are designed to help local businesses boost their cocktail menus—creating new jobs and supporting the local wine industry. KSBY-TV
- ➤ Cal Poly employees will receive a one-time bonus from a $144 million state loan approved for faculty and staff across all 22 Cal State campuses—union negotiations will determine the distribution timeline. The zero-interest loan will be repaid by July 1 as a measure recognizing their dedication. Mustang News
- ➤ The San Luis Obispo Council of Governments is partnering with local agencies to host a public workshop for input on the Morro Bay—Los Osos corridor transportation plan that aims to improve roads, bike paths and coastal access against flood risks.
