- ➤ On October 11, the Cal Poly Cat Program hosted an adoption event where community members worked to find new homes for kittens—an effort that showed how hard it can be to match pets with permanent families in a college town. Mustang News
- ➤ Creston Village Assisted Living is hosting its second annual Halloween trunk-or-treat on Oct. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 1919 Creston Rd.—families can trick-or-treat from decorated trunks, enjoy hot dogs and drinks, and support Alzheimer’s awareness with a donation to the Alzheimer’s Walk team. - ➤ Cal Poly English professor John Hampsey will host a free public reading of his new novel 'Soda Lake' on October 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall—this event marks the first stop on his book tour before the novel is released on October 21. Mustang News
- ➤ Driscoll’s pledged $5 million to Cal Poly to build a state-of-the-art farm store in its six-acre plant sciences complex—set to feature the company’s berries and give students hands-on retail and research experience. CalCoast News
- ➤ Today, Cal Poly freshmen may change their dining plan until Nov. 13 to better match their eating habits. The new plan takes effect at winter quarter while students are told to use the Balance Tracker—only up to $500 will roll over—so they get the option that fits their needs. Mustang News
- ➤ On Oct. 7, Cal Poly professors celebrated the release of the book Waves of Belonging—Indigeneity, Race, and Gender in the Surfing Lineup—at Kennedy Library, where co-editor Lydia Heberling and chapter contributor Elizabeth Sine shared new perspectives on Indigenous surfing history. A Q&A session with college leaders and tribal representatives followed to highlight the work’s focus on identity and inclusion. Mustang News
- ➤ After fall fun ended at Brookshire Farms, its 4.5-acre corn maze served as a classroom for Cal Poly agriculture students to learn how to harvest crops. Co-owner Shawn Callaway said the partnership gave students hands-on field experience—providing a real-world look at modern farming. Mustang News
- ➤ Cal Poly’s CalFresh Healthy Living program ended on Oct. 1 when funding was cut by new SNAP rules that make half-time students ineligible and require part-time students to work 20 hours a week. Manager Olivia Watts said the changes will affect over 1,000 students and that the SLO Food Bank is preparing to serve more people if food needs grow. Mustang News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 867 today to ban declawing cats for looks or ease, allowing the surgery only when a veterinarian finds it medically needed (for injuries, infections, or tumors). Animal Services Shelter Manager Eric Anderson said the law ends more than a decade of efforts by animal advocates to stop a painful procedure (declawing is like cutting off the end of a cat’s toes). - ➤ Hope’s Village of San Luis Obispo will present its proposal for a sustainable community of tiny houses on wheels at the Paso Robles City Council meeting on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.—the plan aims to provide housing for women living in the Salinas Riverbed, and residents can attend at Centennial Park to give their public comments. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ San Luis Obispo Public Health advises residents to avoid ocean water during significant rainstorms and for at least three days afterward due to harmful runoff that carries bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Officials warn that surfers, swimmers, and vulnerable groups such as young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems are most at risk—especially near creeks, rivers, or storm drains.
