EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cal Poly launched Mustang Safe on Sept. 19 to replace the Rave Guardian app and improve campus safety for students, faculty and staff. The new app offers features like Virtual WalkHome, Friend Walk and a live chat with CPPD—tools that support safety on campus. Mustang News
- ➤ Six Cal Poly ROTC cadets from the Mustang Battalion earned the nation’s highest composite score at Advanced Camp during the summer at Fort Knox—an evaluation that measured fitness, leadership, and marksmanship from more than 5,000 cadets. Four received Distinguished Military Graduate recognition for their excellence, reflecting the program’s strong focus on military training. Mustang News
- ➤ Templeton Women’s Charitable Club will expand its scholarship program in 2026 by awarding three $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Templeton High School and Templeton Independent Study High School — club officials said the move follows strong community support — and aims to bolster local education programs. - ➤ Cal Poly students participated in their first prescribed burn at Escuela Ranch, burning 30 acres in less than an hour and gaining hands-on fire management experience under CAL FIRE guidance—24 students worked with California State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service and CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo. Dr. Grupenhoff said the project is expected to lead to more research opportunities and future burns. KSBY-TV

- ➤ A storm caused an unplanned power outage affecting more than 3,400 customers in San Luis Obispo (including the Whole Foods Market in Irish Hills Plaza) that began at 6:22 p.m. on Monday and PG&E said crews will inspect and repair the lines as soon as they are available. KSBY
- ➤ Cal Fire and the Community Fire Safe Council are hosting free chipping events to cut brush and lower wildfire risk for residents in Cambria and Los Osos—today in Cambria and October 21 in Los Osos. Only residents in Moderate, High, or Very High Fire Hazard Zones may join, and space is limited. Paso Robles Daily News

- ➤ Congressman Carbajal is pushing legislation to protect military pay for over 157,000 active service members if Congress fails to secure funding by October 15—service members could miss paychecks. Meanwhile, SpaceX will test its Starship rocket at 4:15 p.m. today, a revived Halloween event on October 25 will offer free family activities at Centennial Park, and residents are preparing for a storm forecast to hit from Monday through Wednesday. - ➤ Olivia is a playful dilute tortie rescued from a San Bernardino shelter on the day she was to be put down and is now waiting for a forever home at Petco Paso Robles. - ➤ Cal Poly Women’s Soccer defeated Cal State Fullerton 2-0 last Sunday as junior forward Annika Smith scored twice to tie senior Jessie Halladay for the Big West goal lead — a win that moved the Mustangs into a three-way tie for third and set up a future match against Long Beach State on Oct. 16 in Long Beach. - ➤ Cal Poly Women's Soccer was shut out in a 1—0 loss to Hawaii on Oct.9 as Hawaii scored a goal near the end of the first half—Cal Poly managed 11 shots but could not finish, leaving the team in fifth place in the Big West standings. Mustang News
- ➤ Templeton Tennis Ranch joined the international Mouratoglou Tennis Center network with a new partnership announced on Oct.7 and will operate as Templeton Tennis Ranch, a Mouratoglou Tennis Center to offer elite coaching and training for local players. The partnership marks the network’s first California location — a move expected to boost regional tennis development — and gives members preferred access to international facilities.
