  • Firefighters from across the Central Coast taught fire safety to students at local schools on Thursday as part of the 33rd annual Burn Relay, ending their route at the Farmers' Market. Fire Prevention Week events continue through Saturday—providing over 8,000 children a chance to learn safe exit techniques during a fire.  KSBY-TV
  • The Central Coast hosted a mix of events this weekend, with the Think Pink Sunset Rooftop Party in Santa Barbara taking place yesterday while tomorrow will bring a car show at the Santa Maria Police Department, a 5K walk in Cambria, a festival in Los Olivos, a cat adoption day at Monarch Books, and a parade in Paso Robles—ongoing pumpkin patch fun in Solvang and barefoot concerts in Los Osos add to the lineup.  KSBY-TV
  • Today, an appeal hearing for Paul Flores in the Kristin Smart case is held in Ventura County—key for reexamining his trial.   • Decemil Estate Wines has opened its new Wine Lounge in the Historic 1888 Grangers Union building at 13th and Pine in downtown Paso Robles, where guests can get 50 percent off tastings through Oct. 31. The lounge offers table seating for tastings and bottle service, a small tasting bar, a bench lounge area, and a wall-mounted fireplace — adding a modern take on a 1920s speakeasy for wine fans.  Paso Robles Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cal Poly Rose Float students loaded their half of the 2026 float onto a tractor-trailer on Oct. 9 at the campus Rose Float Lab for transport to Pomona — the two halves will be joined and completed over the next 12 weeks for the Rose Parade. The float, titled 'Jungle Jumpstart,' shows rainforest creatures coming together to restore a robot.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Cal Poly Music faculty will perform a Faculty Showcase recital at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in Room 218 of the Davidson Music Center during Mustang Family Weekend, and new flutist Jennifer Jo will debut with pianist Idona Cabrinha as the group plays works by Piazzolla, Prokofiev, Chopin and Anderson, with candy provided for attendees (tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students).  Paso Robles Daily News

  • Cal Poly's International Center moved to room 319 of the renovated Kennedy Library on Sept. 15 as part of a campus effort to bring key services together—its old room in building 52 was converted into classrooms.  Mustang News
  • Budget cuts to Calfresh and federal funds have hurt student budgets on campus and in SLO county - social workers and students reported that reduced food aid has made it harder to afford groceries.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Paso Robles City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to introduce an ordinance adopting the 2025 California Building Standards Code—with minor local amendments such as restrictions on underground EV charging—to keep the city in compliance with state law. The ordinance will return for a second reading on Nov. 4 and new building permits will require the updated code effective Jan. 1.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • County election officials announced that residents will vote yes or no on Proposition 50 in the special statewide election on November 4 with polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters can check their registration, register until Oct. 30, use vote-by-mail, or drop off ballots at University Union—providing several ways to cast their ballot.  Mustang News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cal Poly Volleyball won a five-set match over UC Santa Barbara at Mott Athletics Center to extend their home winning streak to nine games — the team recorded 12 blocks to secure the Blue-Green rivalry win. The Mustangs will face University of Hawaii later today at Stan Sheriff Center at 10 p.m.  Mustang News
