COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct.4 at Laguna Lake Park, the SLO Pickle Festival drew over 600 people who took part in pickle-eating contests, tastings, and fun activities to support Meals That Connect, a program that gives free, healthy meals to seniors. The event was organized by a team that included first-time admin Jaclyn Bartholomew and featured local vendors—showing the strong community spirit in support of a vital cause.  Mustang News
  • Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County is issuing its final call for tickets for Home Sweet Home: A Brunch to Build Futures on Oct. 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lone Madrone Winery in Paso Robles—tickets are $60 in advance and funds will support affordable housing programs for local families and seniors.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Atascadero’s El Camino Homeless Organization celebrated the groundbreaking of the BalayKo Family Resource Center on Oct. 6—this 7,200 square foot facility will add 30 beds and offer an activity room, workforce training classroom and private spaces for families with children. ECHO CEO Wendy Lewis and local officials attended the event as the nonprofit works to ease a waitlist of over 300 families.  KSBY-TV
  • Crews are repairing Highway 1 near Guadalupe with one-way traffic causing delays up to 10 minutes—projected to finish by the end of November, while a fundraiser in Nipomo raised funds for survivors and Fire Prevention Week reminds residents to use rechargeable battery safety tips. Meathead Movers is launching its Pledge to Protect campaign to assist domestic violence survivors, local air quality readings have moved to moderate under new EPA guidelines, and Native American tribes held a two-day powwow in Santa Ynez.  KSBY

  • Gina Fitzpatrick resigned as president and CEO of the Paso Robles and Templeton Chamber of Commerce after 10 years, and Board Chair Rob Covarrubias stepped down to serve as interim CEO—he will manage daily operations and lead the search for a permanent leader.   • Templeton High School Theatre Arts Program will present its fall production, Radium Girls, from November 6 to November 15 at the school's Performing Arts Center on S. Main Street—this play tells the true story of young dial painters who fell ill from radium exposure and features performances at 7 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 2 p.m. on Saturdays.  Paso Robles Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal Poly Basic Needs closed its fall meal voucher applications early as nearly 1,000 students applied in one day—about 10% more than last year—and it will reopen applications during the first week of winter quarter.  Mustang News
  • An English sophomore columnist wrote a five-step checklist to help SLO students navigate a competitive off-campus housing search—whether they plan to move from dorms or at Poly Canyon Village. The guide advises setting a budget, researching local options, and contacting potential roommates—steps that will help students secure a lease by November.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at 5 p.m., the San Luis Obispo City Council meets at City Hall to review updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone standards that now affect 64% of parcels and add nearly 8,800 affected properties. Council members will use public input to decide if changes to the Wildland Urban Interface Code are needed—measures that may help guard against wildfires.  KSBY-TV
  • During Fire Prevention Week, the San Luis Obispo Fire Department warns that lithium-ion batteries can cause fires that produce a lot of heat and dangerous gases, and events (running through Saturday) stress calling 911 and leaving the area if a fire starts. The department said six battery-related fires have occurred this year and urged that batteries be taken to approved sites (like Office Depot or Best Buy) for proper disposal.  KSBY-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Morro Bay issued a boil water notice in parts of town on October 6 after a contractor caused a water main break that led to low water pressure & city staff advised residents and businesses to use boiled or bottled water until tests confirm the water is safe to drink.  CalCoast News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cal Poly Volleyball lost to UC San Diego and CSU Long Beach this past weekend, ending an eight-game win streak — the Mustangs will now face UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. today at Mott Athletics Center to try to rebound.  Mustang News
  • Cal Poly Football fell to UC Davis 34-27 on Saturday night at Spanos Stadium (marking their ninth straight loss in the Golden Horseshoe rivalry) and will play Montana next weekend.  Mustang News
