COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug. 8, a screening hosted by the Diversity Coalition with Unitarian Universalists in San Luis Obispo showed a film and held a panel where alleged hate speech called for boycotting Jewish groups and even repeating a massacre in Israel — sparking demands for clear condemnation. Jewish organizations and District Attorney Dan Dow have since urged the coalition to apologize and denounce the hateful remarks.  CalCoast News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, August 31, a tree knocked down power lines along Highway 46 west to Lake Nacimiento, cutting power for 1,464 PG&E customers and sparking a small fire at 290 Winery Road — firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and PG&E estimated that power had been restored by 6 p.m.  CalCoast News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • San Luis Obispo County saw gas prices rise four cents to $4.92 a gallon last week after a refinery flooded, causing the largest Midwest refinery to shut down for several days during a severe thunderstorm—AAA data show the county now has the seventh highest gas prices in the state while cheaper gas is available at several local stations.  CalCoast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California Fish and Wildlife has posted a request for proposals for a new operator for a public shooting range (located off Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay) after ending the San Luis Obispo Sportsman’s Association’s lease on December 31 for contract violations. Proposals are due in October and will be reviewed (45 days after submission).  CalCoast News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cal Poly football opened its season with a 41 to 17 win over University of San Diego when transfer quarterback Ty Dieffenbach connected with receiver Michael Briscoe for multiple touchdowns—adding over 334 passing yards in the game. The Mustangs will build on their victory in their next game against the Utah Utes on Sept. 6 at 3 p.m.  Mustang News
