ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A devastating fire on Saturday afternoon in Creston destroyed a barn with a second-story apartment, five cars, two trucks, a tractor, a motorcycle, a water tank, and a well, leaving the property without water—Garrison Hall rescued three horses and sustained minor injuries while community members launched a fundraiser and officials continue to investigate the cause. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The CHP will patrol for DUI from Friday, Aug. 29 at 6:01 p.m. until Monday, Sept. 1 at 11:59 p.m. during Labor Day weekend to stop impaired drivers — the patrols are part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Paso Robles Daily News
- ➤ On August 27, 31-year-old Jacob Levi Arvik, a wanted felon from San Luis Obispo, was arrested in Grover Beach after officers spotted him driving a stolen car; he fled on foot, leaving behind a loaded gun (and a 30-round magazine), and now faces charges including auto theft, firearm offenses, and possession of burglary tools with bail set at $100,000. - ➤ A wanted felon was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a police chase in Grover Beach — the pursuit began near Grand Avenue and 13th Street and ended when the suspect fled on foot near a Burger King, where officers recovered a loaded firearm and magazine before booking 31-year-old Jacob Levi Arvik on charges including auto theft, firearm offenses, possession of stolen property and burglary tools. - ➤ The 41st annual Central Coast Writers Conference at Cuesta College will be held Sept. 26—27 and will feature 45 presenters, over 50 workshops, eight master classes, two keynotes, and a teen writing session. Attendees will explore topics such as AI tools, self-publishing, and screenwriting—along with a film screening in downtown San Luis Obispo—while registration costs $300 in advance and includes Saturday lunch. - ➤ Cal Poly was ranked 55th nationally in Forbes’ 2025–26 America’s Top Colleges list released on August 26—rising from 57th last year and ranking 12th among California schools. The college credited its Learn by Doing approach with preparing students for successful careers. KSBY

- ➤ Atascadero and Central Coast Zoo introduced baby mongoose lemur Koba, born on July 4, who is exploring his habitat while zookeepers monitor his growth—he joins his older brother Ravi as part of a species survival plan to protect this critically endangered animal. Paso Robles Daily News

- ➤ PG&E announced today that Diablo Canyon Power Plant has entered extended operations because Senate Bill 846 signed by Governor Newsom now allows the plant to run until at least 2030. The change replaces earlier plans to shut down Unit 1 in November and Unit 2 on August 26. KSBY-TV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ County Behavioral Health and the Opioid Safety Coalition will host SLO Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 30 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Mitchell Park — the free event will offer Naloxone training, resource booths and a tribute for those lost to overdose. More than 2,000 doses of Naloxone were given out countywide from July 1 to June 30 to help reverse overdoses. Paso Robles Daily News
