- ➤ The American Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter today at Arroyo Grande High School, 495 Valley Road, for people displaced by the Gifford Fire that burned 104,402 acres and was 21% contained as of Saturday morning. Volunteers serve shelter, water, meals and health services—pet owners are advised to bring supplies for their small animals. Paso Robles Daily News

- ➤ Meals That Connect will host the SLO Pickle Festival on Oct. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Laguna Lake Park—featuring unlimited pickle-inspired tastings from local vendors, live music, dancing, and VIP early access from noon to 1 p.m. Tickets for this 21-and-older event will go on sale Aug. 14. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Gifford Fire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties burned 111,557 acres, destroyed two structures, and injured eight people — firefighters are battling the blaze, which remains 21% contained while threatening 2,912 buildings and facing challenges accessing areas near the Machesna Mountain and Garcia Wilderness zones due to federal rules.
