- ➤ Newton, a 10-year-old Welsh Corgi mix from San Luis Obispo County Animal Services Shelter, was celebrated on August 1 during National Shelter Pet Birthday and remains in foster care waiting for a forever home — Rosie, a 2-year-old English Bulldog from Woods Humane Society continues to wait for a permanent family. Charities will launch The Pitch, a three-month program that pairs nine nonprofits with expert coaches to build strong storytelling skills—each organization will refine a three-minute pitch for a live event on Nov. 6 at the Vina Robles Tasting Room where judges will award $45,000 to top presenters. - ➤ Fire crews responded to a vegetation fire at 2:13 p.m. Friday near 3200 Sulfur Springs Road in the Salinas Riverbed and contained the quarter-acre blaze with 35 personnel by 2:35 p.m.—the cause remains under investigation. Paso Robles Daily News
- ➤ Three local men rescued a 30-year-old man (drowning in a pool) at Laguna Terrace Mobile Home Park on Pefumo Canyon Road on August 1 after he sank underwater while swimming with his children, and first responders later took him to a local hospital where he is receiving care for lung damage. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Bystanders subdue suspect Royce Taylor Bechtel, 45, who was seen with a knife and threatening to kill a man on the 600 block of El Camino Real at about 6:13 a.m. Friday in Arroyo Grande — after an earlier arrest and release from jail — and he is now booked on charges of attempted murder and criminal threats. - ➤ Daniel Navarro, 41, was convicted on federal charges for enticing a 15-year-old girl by posing as a teen online and taking her to Tijuana, where she was rescued, and investigators found he used Instagram to distribute child pornography — he faces sentencing on October 24. KSBY

- ➤ On August 1, the fast-moving Gifford Fire grew to 818 acres in four hours across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. A caller reported four small fires along Highway 166 that forced its closure between Highway 101 and New Cuyama and prompted several evacuations—officials reported no containment at the time.
