COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Woods Humane Society has started the August Match Challenge – backed by the Community Foundation and an anonymous donor – to match donations up to $25,000 as it responds to a 218 percent rise in homeless puppies this year. The shelter cared for more puppies in the first half than all of last year and will use extra funds for food, shelter, and medical care.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • City of Atascadero will host the 32nd Annual Hot El Camino Cruise Nite on Aug. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. along El Camino Real with up to 350 vehicles—registration is now open at Colony Park Community Center located at 5599 Traffic Way, where mail-in entries are accepted through Aug. 1 and walk-ins are available until 4 p.m.—and day-of registration costs $45.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County will host a free public event called 'Evening in the Garden' (at the Centennial Park Demonstration Garden on 600 Nickerson Dr. in Paso Robles) on Aug. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; visitors will view eight garden plots, ask experts about water-saving techniques, and collect a free take-home activity for children.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • A new DMV office opens this Friday on Santa Maria Way as the Madre Fire is now 100% contained after burning over 80,000 acres—with one structure lost and two firefighters hurt, Amtrak service between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara will pause from Friday until August 16 for bridge repairs. A federal policy has stirred concerns among undocumented residents in Santa Barbara even as clinics say they will serve everyone, and San Luis Obispo County will begin the Avila Roundabout Project on August 18 to ease traffic with detours in place.  KSBY-TV

  • Cal Poly published an infographic on May 29 that details the challenges and demographics of student parents balancing coursework and family needs—data supported by a $60,000 grant now helps guide policy changes and resource allocation on campus. This effort aims to provide better targeted support including priority registration and improved on-campus amenities.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Luis Obispo is under a tsunami advisory after an 8.8 earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula prompted officials to warn residents to avoid beaches and waterways. If a tsunami arrives, it will hit Morro Bay and Port San Luis around 11:10 p.m.—and reach Pismo Beach by 11:20 p.m.  Mustang News
  • The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office is recruiting volunteers for its Auxiliary Volunteer Patrol academy, which will begin this fall with interviews in early September to support road closures during emergencies and community events — including youth camps and football games.
