- ➤ San Luis Obispo police are asking the public for help identifying a man captured on camera stealing two Yeti coolers and a Makita drill set from Miner’s Ace Hardware on Santa Barbara Street on July 17 who wore a black T-shirt and sunglasses (if you have information, call Officer Bracy at (805) 594-8087 or Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-7867, case 250717071). - ➤ Canzona Women’s Ensemble will hold auditions for its fall concert Heart Strings: Ties That Bind on Aug. 14 in San Luis Obispo and Aug. 16 in Shell Beach — the ensemble seeks experienced women singers who will perform a prepared solo piece and participate in sight-reading and vocal range assessments. - ➤ Paso Robles Joint Unified School District will begin a new cell phone policy on August 14 that aligns with the Phone-Free School Act—students in grades TK through 8 will not use cell phones during the school day, with grades 7 and 8 required to keep phones in Yondr bags. High school students may use phones before and after school and during lunch. Paso Robles Daily News
- ➤ Cal Poly faculty secured two new patents that address health care and emergency response challenges—one developed by biomedical engineering professor Trevor Cardinal and his team uses muscle stem cells to grow natural bypasses in mice, while the other, by structural engineering professor Long Wang and student Colby Scanlon, creates a foldable hinge for rapid assembly of temporary structures. - ➤ One Cool Earth—a nonprofit that built over 50 school gardens in 25 years—is asking local residents and businesses for help as cuts in federal to local funding may force it to scale back programs teaching nutrition, science, and nature skills. Last year the nonprofit delivered more than 3,500 lessons in 33 school gardens and reached over 12,000 students, warning that its outdoor classrooms could soon close without more support. - ➤ California State Parks announced improvements to its website that now shows nearly real-time campsite availability on Parks.ca.gov—letting visitors check site status and nearby options while bookings remain through ReserveCalifornia. The state is expanding its free reservation drawing by adding Malibu Creek this month and planning to include Morro Bay and McArthur-Burney Falls later this summer. Paso Robles Daily News
