  • Dylan Davis and Alex Musco, business students at Cal Poly, started SLO Riders Club so kids in San Luis Obispo can learn mountain biking safely. The program offers weekly rides split by age group (for children ages 4 to 6 in Tiny Sprockets and for those 12 and older in Juniors) and grew from two riders in spring to more than 20, with fall rides set to be among their last before they graduate.  Mustang News

  • The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to help find 16-year-old Navada Austin who was reported missing on July 10 from her Nipomo home, last seen at 11:15 a.m. wearing a black jacket, black pants, and a black backpack—she may have been seen in San Miguel or Santa Maria with a white male juvenile and might try to reach Washington.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Gaea Powell, a 62-year-old former Arroyo Grande mayoral candidate, pleaded not guilty to nine election fraud charges related to the 2022 and 2024 elections—she was ordered to report for booking at San Luis Obispo County Jail with her next hearing set for Aug. 11.  CalCoast News
  • A Paso Robles probation & parole sweep on July 15 netted five arrests for violations and drug-related offenses after officers from Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County, state parole and Atascadero & San Luis Obispo police checked 23 homes and booked the suspects in county jail.  CalCoast News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alternative Tastes Wine Festival will take place in Paso Robles on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 and is co-hosted by Brecon Estate and CRUSH Vineyard—starting with an outdoor dinner at Brecon Estate on Aug. 1 and continuing with an educational seminar, grand tasting, and silent auction on Aug. 2. All proceeds will benefit Libretto Conservatory through funds raised at the event.  Paso Robles Daily News

  • Almond Acres Charter Academy in Paso Robles will host a one-day educator workshop on Aug. 8 with Gail Boushey, co-author of Prepared Classroom: Ready to Teach, Ready to Learn, for teachers, paraeducators, and administrators from across California.   • California Assembly Bill 84 will increase oversight for charter schools today as it heads back to the Senate Committee on Education with concerns raised by Heartland representatives and protesters who gathered outside Senator John Laird’s office in San Luis Obispo. The bill is set to tighten financial accountability and may raise overhead costs—changes that could affect how schools serve their students before it must pass the Legislature by September 12.  KSBY

  • A judge ruled on Tuesday that John Belsher’s children do not have rights to his former home on El Cerrito Street after a $3.6 million fraud judgment, and the property will be sold at a sheriff’s auction today at 11 a.m. at the San Luis Obispo Courthouse—room 236 to pay the debt.  CalCoast News

  • Two Cal Poly baseball players, Zach Daudet and Luke Kovach, were selected in the MLB draft on Monday, July 14 — Daudet by the Houston Astros and Kovach by the Toronto Blue Jays — and catcher Jack Collins signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Texas Rangers.  Mustang News
