CRIME NEWS

  • A Cal Poly student was arrested for vandalizing the Financial Aid and Student Accounts office during a pro-Palestine protest on June 4 and he may face expulsion as police continue their investigation+ campus groups contend that the action limits free speech.  Mustang News
  • The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance footage from July 1 at 10 a.m. showing a suspect at a home on the 200 block of Calle Arroyo in Shandon where cash and jewelry were taken, and officials are asking anyone with information to call the sheriff’s office.  KSBY-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia group G. Love & Special Sauce, known for its blend of blues, funk, & hip-hop, will open for David Lee Roth on Tuesday, July 22 at Chumash Grandstand Arena during the California Mid-State Fair, which runs from July 16 to July 27.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Studios on the Park will host a free presentation on August 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 1130 Pine Street (featuring Chef Gail Classick, Chef Candice Custodio, and Jessie Wesch) where local culinary professionals will explain how food engages the community.  Paso Robles Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Mid Central Coast and Paso Robles Joint Unified School District signed a three-year agreement to expand after-school programming at the Tom Maas Clubhouse in response to reduced bussing services from key schools—Georgia Brown, Winifred Pifer, Kermit King, Virginia Peterson, Glen Speck, and Lewis Flamson Junior High. The organization will cover an extra $200,000 to pay for new transportation costs and keep programs affordable for families.  Paso Robles Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • PG&E and Diablo Canyon officials hold a 'Rise and Shine' meeting today at the South County Regional Center in Arroyo Grande from 7:30 to 9 a.m. — they will share updates on regional developments. Fire crews battle the Madre Fire that has burned over 80,000 acres in southeast San Luis Obispo County while PG&E begins a megabundling infrastructure upgrade for 5,000 customers with work set to finish by October — rising temperatures may worsen fire conditions.  KSBY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The California Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to hear the Coastal Commission's appeal, which means the commission cannot ban off-road vehicle use at the Oceano Dunes—upholding earlier rulings that it overstepped its authority and preserving a popular local recreation option.  CalCoast News
  • The Paso Robles Groundwater Authority has proposed a fee for large pumpers to fund its Groundwater Sustainability Plan and meet state rules. Notices were mailed to agricultural, commercial and public water system users — parcels with domestic wells pumping less than 2 acre-feet are exempt — and affected users may file written protests before a public hearing on August 1.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Local businessman Adam Verdin — an attorney and community volunteer — announced his candidacy on July 10th to challenge current supervisor Jimmy Paulding for the San Luis Obispo County seat. He will focus his campaign on affordable housing, improved medical care and upgrading roads, water systems and broadband.  CalCoast News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The county public health department advised fairgoers to drink water, wash hands often, and update vaccine records as the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles will begin on July 16. They also urged visitors to avoid eating or drinking in animal areas and to take breaks in the shade—steps intended to reduce the spread of germs.  Paso Robles Daily News
