Firefighters halted the forward spread of the Madre Fire in San Luis Obispo with cooler temperatures and reduced winds, reaching 62% containment and reopening Highway 166 on Tuesday evening.

The fire burned 80,610 acres, destroyed one outbuilding, and repair efforts continue while a caller reported another fire near Highway 166 shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday and a firefighter was injured on Sunday.

Officials held an open house Wednesday to discuss a proposed fee for agricultural, commercial and public water system pumpers in the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin that will fund the Groundwater Sustainability Plan to meet state law.

Affected pumpers on 1,315 parcels have been notified and may protest the fee by August 1, and another open house is held today at the Creston Community Center at 5 p.m.—local officials say the fee will help balance groundwater use.
