ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, Coast Guard crew members rescued four boaters after their vessel caught fire while under tow about five miles off the coast of Cayucos—one boater was taken to a San Luis Obispo hospital with minor burns.  Paso Robles Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marcum Olive Oil in Paso Robles won Best of Show for its Coratina extra virgin olive oil at the Athena International Olive Oil Competition in Athens, Greece where 640 oils from 23 countries were judged in a blind tasting—marking its second consecutive win. Founders Grant and Lonnie Marcum accepted the award with gratitude while they continue to use sustainable methods to produce high-quality olive oil.  Paso Robles Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • ICE agents arrested suspect Ismael Garcia Cruz near the courthouse on July 2—he has a violent criminal history that includes domestic assault and robbery, according to the district attorney.  CalCoast News
  • Two people were arrested after a road rage incident involving firearms at Lake Nacimiento on Saturday + authorities said two to three people were involved and no injuries were reported.  KSBY
  • Deputies from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a road rage incident near Lake Nacimiento on Saturday evening where two people were arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon — no injuries were reported and officials have contacted everyone involved.  Paso Robles Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Even though California’s gas tax went up on July 1, AAA said the average gas price in San Luis Obispo dropped one cent to $4.99 per gallon last week. In California, gas prices fell to $4.55 per gallon while local stations in SLO County offered rates as low as $4.29 per gallon—showing a mixed picture for drivers across the state.  CalCoast News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Cal Poly’s Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs sent a campus-wide email about the death of a student that was drafted with the family’s input and follows a policy used 17 times over the past ten years—seven of those messages were sent this academic year. The email provided campus members with information on support services and a memorial page to help guide their grief.  Mustang News
  • Cal Poly’s Army ROTC program will shut down by the end of the 2026–2027 academic year—cadets who have finished two or three years can complete their degrees and officer training, while others must transfer to continue their training. The Army said a 12% reduction in the Cadet Command’s civilian workforce prompted the closure as part of its Transformation Initiative.  Mustang News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A wildfire that began July 2 near Highway 166 in New Cuyama has burned about 79,630 acres across eastern San Luis Obispo County and is now 10 percent contained; officials said 50 structures are threatened + the cause is under investigation with no injuries reported.  Paso Robles Daily News
