Good morning, San Luis Obispo. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eight-year-old pit-mix Daisy from the San Luis Obispo Animal Services Shelter became the shelter’s friendly office greeter after arriving as a stray — she weighs about 75 lbs and does best as the only pet in an active household. Pet owners are reminded that more pets go missing on the Fourth of July so they should microchip their pets and keep them inside.  KSBY-TV
  • Local almost 12-year-old Janeth Ruiz from Orcutt has turned her school lost and found into a community resource by donating clothes to the Marian Regional Medical Center Pediatric Closet. She began donating in kindergarten and this week contributed around 150 items (including sweaters and jackets) with help from her mother.  KSBY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple agencies have been working since just after 11 p.m. Friday on a second-alarm fire at Templeton Feed & Grain on the 400 block of S. Main Street — flames spread to nearby vegetation and firefighters are protecting adjacent structures as they investigate a possible collapse.  KSBY
  • The northbound lanes of Highway 101 in Atascadero closed late Friday morning because a fire was reported near Traffic Way — causing traffic to back up before noon while the southbound lanes remained open.  KSBY-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • One Cool Earth reported that Atascadero Unified School District now averages 3.9 environmental education programs per school, more than double or quadruple what other county districts offer. District leaders work with local providers to add hands-on lessons to the school day + they implemented a campus sustainability policy to support all students.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • The Madre Fire in San Luis Obispo County reached 52,592 acres, making it the largest fire in California in 2025 and remaining 10% contained. Officials issued evacuation orders for communities near Highway 166 and closed the highway after a report of the blaze burning between Santa Maria and New Cuyama as high winds, dry brush, and high temperatures drove the fire into Carrizo Plain National Monument.  CalCoast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau announced its support for the new Joint Powers Authority that will manage the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin under SGMA—calling it a cost-effective way to protect private property rights and reduce fees. They said the authority will help secure water for all beneficial users in the basin.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • North Fork Rancheria Tribal TANF moved its office to 8865 Morro Road in Atascadero after eight years of serving Native American families—its new location can host larger events including an open house on Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. and a Backpacks & Education event on July 22 from noon to 4 p.m., serving families in San Benito and Monterey counties.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Caltrans will mow Highway 41 West from Three Bridges to Los Altos Road starting Monday, July 7 at 8 a.m. and will operate through Thursday, July 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The work zone between Atascadero and Morro Bay has reversing traffic control — drivers must slow down for safety.  Paso Robles Daily News
