- ➤ Tyra King, a mother of four, secured housing in San Luis Obispo through the ECHO program and was surprised on Tuesday with a welcome basket—this gift included a grant, plaque, kitchen supplies and cozy blankets from Bible for Breakfast Ministries. KSBY-TV
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Rite Aid will close five more stores in San Luis Obispo County as part of its plan to shut eight locations locally and over 400 stores nationwide. The Morro Bay store will close on July 7, and the Arroyo Grande, Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo stores will close over the next two months after the company filed for Chapter 11 on May 5—its move to sell or close all stores could limit local access. - ➤ On Tuesday evening in Los Osos, sheriff deputies shot and killed an armed 40-year-old suspect from Chowchilla after he reportedly brandished a handgun near a woman's home—investigators have placed the involved deputies on administrative leave as they review the incident. CalCoast News
- ➤ After being removed from a San Luis Obispo bar early Sunday morning, 28-year-old Giovani Palombi from Nipomo picked a fight on Marsh Street as he attempted to steal money and slash a victim with his pocketknife—police later arrested him on felony charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Susan Miller, a former CIA operative and Cal Poly alum, will receive the International Spy Museum's Hidden Hero Award in November to honor her 39-year career that included key missions like reporting on election interference. She will also serve as a keynote speaker at Mustang Media Fest in October to share her story with the public. Mustang News
- ➤ California's new law Assembly Bill 2863 went into effect July 1 and requires businesses to obtain express affirmative consent for automatic renewals—forcing disclosure of billing frequency, price changes, and cancellation methods. The law also mandates a seven-day notice before any subscription price increase to help protect consumers from unexpected charges. KSBY-TV
- ➤ On July 1st, Caltrans awarded $26.5 million in planning grants for 65 projects to strengthen climate resiliency, reduce pollution and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in the state, including four projects in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The grants will fund studies such as a climate vulnerability analysis on Highway 1 + planning for a multi-use path to support local transportation improvements. CalCoast News

- ➤ A study by Affordable Housing Hub found that 53% of 1,000 Americans lost sleep over money worries and nearly half used credit cards for basics, while Thomas Buckley of Aspire said the stress is hurting mental health by limiting access to care.
