COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cal Poly Cat Program urgently seeks summer volunteer support from the Central Coast community to care for rescued cats and kittens during student break from June 14 until September 18—expenses are covered and training is provided for fosters and shelter tasks.  KSBY-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 7 at about 5:07 a.m., Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to a fire at 2508 Spring Street and quickly put out the flames on a burning deck and tree—extra help was cancelled and no one was hurt.  Paso Robles Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • San Luis Obispo Police and state agents conducted Minor Decoy and Shoulder Tap operations in May and early June, arresting a store clerk at Vons on May 22, a person buying alcohol for a minor on May 29, and a store clerk at SLO Ranch Market on June 5 (all related to alcohol sales to minors).  KSBY-TV
  • On June 6, Alice Sommers, a 15-year-old girl with red or auburn hair and hazel eyes, was reported missing by her parents and police say she may be in the San Jose area with an adult male known as Damien; anyone with information is asked to call the police at (805) 461-5051.  Paso Robles Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Paso Robles City Library will host an in-person Cinema Club event in the Story Hour Room on Friday, June 27 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In honor of Father’s Day, the library will screen the classic film 'To Kill a Mockingbird'—registration is required.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • At the 22nd Annual Ice Cream Zoofari event on June 7, the zoo in Atascadero revealed its new name—Central Coast Zoo—to honor its regional roots and 70th anniversary. The zoo also unveiled Charles Paddock Plaza—featuring a bronze statue of founder Charles Paddock and his first animal, Cosmo Topper—and introduced a refreshed logo and a children’s activity book for local events.  Paso Robles Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grover Beach City Council reviewed written protests and heard public comments on Monday regarding its plan to raise sewer rates by 89% over the next five years—property owners could stop the increase if more than 50% file valid protests, while a phased rate hike approved in April will start on July 1 and double rates after four years if adopted.  CalCoast News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three rabies cases have been reported in wildlife this year amid increased bat encounters and seasonal wildlife activity, and county officials are urging residents to vaccinate pets because the disease is fatal if untreated. They also advise everyone not to touch dead or injured bats+ to contact Animal Services immediately if needed.  CalCoast News
