CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, many events will take place across the Central Coast from May 29 to June 1 (including the Santa Maria Elks Rodeo and Parade, the Classic at Pismo Beach car show, the Greek Festival at Madonna Expo Center, and Pride in the Plaza in San Luis Obispo) as organizers plan fun, family-friendly gatherings in several towns.  KSBY
  • On Sunday, Cal Poly held its spring fashion show where 31 student designers showed creative works on the theme (Roots) that focused on heritage, growth, and sustainability. The event was organized by the FITS Club and the Sustainable Fashion Club and featured designs made from thrifted and recycled items.  Mustang News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. Marines brought a pull-up challenge to Cal Poly on May 29 to let students test their strength and learn about serving in the Marine Corps — several participants competed for prizes and finished an impromptu workout.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire San Luis Obispo announced that backyard burn season is suspended effective June 2 due to statewide fire conditions and busy fire suppression forces — only agricultural burners with valid permits may burn on permissive days.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Caltrans will close the road from Highway 41 to Highway 33 from June 9 to June 13 for work near the Highway 41 and 46 interchange, forcing Central Valley commuters to take Highway 33 as a detour with up to 90-minute delays. The project includes a new flyover ramp that will remove left turns from heavy traffic—part of an effort to widen Highway 46 east from Paso Robles to Cholame.  KSBY-TV
  • San Luis Obispo County District 2 Supervisor Bruce Gibson announced on Thursday that he will not seek re-election in 2026 after nearly 20 years in office. He said he will move on to a new role—one that focuses on specific public issues—and welcomes fresh leadership for the district.  KSBY-TV

  • After months of negotiations, developers and opponents of the Dana Reserve housing project in Nipomo reached a settlement that reduces total housing units by 229 and halves the affordable homes while still offering benefits like down payment assistance and on-site childcare—changes that now await review by the County Board.  CalCoast News
