  • Opolo Vineyards in Paso Robles became the first U.S. winery to gain federal approval to bottle the Balkan grape Vranac—its 2021 Vranac Reserve is priced at $60 per bottle with a production limit of 50 cases available at the tasting room. The winery sourced its Vranac vines through UC Davis and expanded its planting from 1,000 vines in 2018 to honor its Balkan heritage.  Paso Robles Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Atascadero police broke up a large drug operation by seizing 12 pounds of drugs — including cocaine and fentanyl — and guns from properties in Paso Robles after a month-long investigation and arrested two suspects.  KSBY-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The A-Town Art Hop will return to Downtown Atascadero on June 13 and June 14 as a free, self-guided event with over 20 businesses showcasing art and live demonstrations—local artists will provide creative displays and meet visitors—organizers expect the event to boost downtown revitalization.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Chase Rice will perform at Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles on Sept. 25 as part of his Go Down Singin’ International Tour — singer-songwriter Hannah McFarland will support him and tickets go on sale Friday, May 30 at 10 a.m.  Paso Robles Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal Poly’s soil judging team finished fifth at the 2025 National Collegiente Soils contest — after a second-place finish in regionals and top-ten placements by members — and earned a ticket to nationals in Wisconsin. The team practices soil analysis on campus and studies local soil pits to build skills and honor its well-known soil science program.  Mustang News
  • From June 7 to August 9, every public library in San Luis Obispo County will host a summer reading program that challenges participants to track their progress and win small prizes—such as a book bag and a new book. Erica Thatcher said the program will help kids and families continue reading over the summer while national reading scores keep declining.  KSBY-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rainfall totals in San Luis Obispo County were slightly below average from July 1 through May 27 — ranging from about 66% of normal in some areas to slightly above average in others — and reservoirs like Santa Margarita Lake and Lopez Lake remain healthy after several wet years.  CalCoast News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bob Cantu, a Central Coast native and former USC coach, announced that his annual basketball camp will move from Paso Robles High School to St. Rose School in Paso Robles for June 16—19, using the school’s Parish Center gym. He said the change reflects rising financial charges and his deep connection to the school where he attended junior high.  Paso Robles Daily News
