  • Fourth-grade students from Saint Rose Catholic School in Paso Robles organized a school-wide bake sale that raised nearly $600 to help people facing homelessness. The effort, led by Matthew Andros and Hadley Hoover under the guidance of Mrs. Glunz, provided funds to purchase groceries, toiletries, warm socks, and blankets for Echo Homeless Shelter+nearly 100 individuals in need.  Paso Robles Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Francisco Pablo Zaragoza Guzman was found guilty by a San Luis Obispo County jury on nine counts of child sexual abuse that occurred between 2006 and 2013 in Paso Robles and Santa Maria — his sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 6.  CalCoast News
  • CHP officers arrested a parolee on May 8 after stopping his car for expired registration and finding a firearm under the passenger seat and a loaded ghost gun in the center console.  CalCoast News

  • Local Catholics visited Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa after Pope Leo XIV was announced on Thursday. Pat Murphy and Bishop Daniel Garcia said the Chicago native—brought to Rome by Pope Francis in 2023—may continue Pope Francis’s work of unity.  KSBY-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit SLO CAL reported that San Luis Obispo County's tourism industry grew by 2.6% in 2024 to reach $2.4 billion while tourism jobs increased 3.7% to 23,820 and local tax revenue hit $105.6 million. The industry also generated $202.1 million in combined state and local taxes and after-tax earnings rose 4.3% to $953.1 million—accounting for 10.39% of county GDP.  CalCoast News

  • Cal Poly San Luis Obispo President Jeffrey Armstrong handled a congressional hearing on campus antisemitism yesterday—explaining how his task force and work with students have improved the situation—and he faced questions that put his methods in contrast with those of other college leaders.  CalCoast News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Camp Roberts will conduct prescribed burns on May 12—16, May 19—23, and May 27—28 to reduce wildfire hazards, with the main 8,700-acre burn set for May 28 if weather permits. Local officials advise residents to prepare for smoke—especially children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues—as agencies work together to update air quality information.  KSBY-TV

  • SLO County Board of Supervisors declared May CalFresh Awareness Month to support over 31,000 residents amid concerns that proposed cuts in SNAP funding may reduce essential benefits — the SLO Food Bank and Department of Social Services will offer one-on-one appointment help every Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the SLO Food Bank Pantry.  KSBY-TV
