CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 1, the city held a ribbon-cutting event for new public artwork called Shadow of the Mountain under the Hwy 101 overpass on Chorro Street — a project built with help from local artists, designers, community members and city departments.  KSBY-TV
  • The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival opened on April 24 with a red carpet, live jazz, and a screening of 'DJ Ahmet' at the Fremont Theater. Reporter Natalia Young interviewed filmmakers who shared highlights from the event.  Mustang News
  • L.A. band Garden Party performed at Shabang on May 6 and discussed their first show in San Luis Obispo with Mustang News TV Video Director Cassandra Garcia. The band said the experience helped them connect with local fans — and they look forward to returning.  Mustang News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • House Committee leaders warned that university presidents must denounce antisemitism or face termination, with Rep. Lisa McClain stating they should be fired immediately if they do not act. Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong and the presidents from Haverford College and DePaul University will testify today before the Committee on Education and the Workforce—some lawmakers claim the move could threaten academic freedom.  Mustang News
  • The Library Study Center will offer an in-person class titled 'Learning Computer Basics: Intro to Video Conferencing' on May 14 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 3600 Oak Street, Suite 101 (computers are provided and adults will learn to use Zoom for meetings, teaching and telehealth).  Paso Robles Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Poly’s Pier in Avila Beach has been designated as the first open-water research pier for wave energy testing under the Department of Energy’s TEAMER program (a project linking nearly 50 facilities nationwide) and offers a 3,000-foot-long, shore-based site for testing devices in ocean conditions. The university will work with approved applicants to coordinate operations, and the facility is expected to attract interest from early-stage companies and government agencies.  Paso Robles Daily News

  • The City of San Luis Obispo is starting its 2025 Paving Project which will pave Tank Farm Road east of Broad Street, Sacramento Drive, Calle Joaquin and Orcutt Road. Community members can share their feedback at the City Council meeting today at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall Council Hearing Room +990 Palm Street.  KSBY-TV
  • Federal cuts to AmeriCorps funding led to abrupt layoffs and changes at local volunteer service groups—City Farm SLO, Cuesta College, and Cal Poly are now facing sudden staffing gaps—leaving many uncertain about future support.  KSBY-TV

  • Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Amy Leather overcame an injury to become a key player on the women’s tennis team with a record of 13 to 7 and All-Big West Conference Second Team honors; she made her singles debut on March 25, winning 7 to 5 and 6 to 2 while boosting the doubles lineup. Her renewed smile on the court marks a fresh start after a challenging recovery period (she now embraces every match as a chance to grow).  Mustang News
