CULTURE NEWS

  • The second annual Central Coast Jewish Heritage Festival will run May 16–17 in San Luis Obispo, featuring an opening night on May 16 with a film screening of TOVAH and a ticketed reception at 6 p.m. The free main event on May 17 at Mitchell Park will include live music, artisan vendors, and cultural activities for all.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Paso Robles was ranked fifth in USA Today’s list of top Main Streets in the United States, spotlighting its historic downtown with wine tasting, restaurants, and shopping in a program nominated by experts. The ranking was released on April 28.  CalCoast News
  • The Armenian Student Association held a vigil on Dexter lawn Friday evening to mark the 111th-anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, with City Councilmember Mike Boswell and ASA members sharing reflections that honored victims and promoted cultural awareness at Cal Poly.  Mustang News
  • Cuesta College Theatre Arts' student-directed production James and the Giant Peach earned nine national awards from the American College Theatre Festival and was selected to represent Region 8 at a five-day event in Glendale. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal Poly is gathering student input on its plan to shift to year-round operations, aiming to update its academic calendar and address concerns about internships and housing for the 2027-28 academic year. The university will announce town halls and further planning details soon.  Mustang News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire declared that fire season will begin for all state responsibility areas of the county and banned backyard burning of residential debris due to increased fire risk - the order will take effect at 8 a.m. on May 4 and remain until the season ends.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Since 2017, thousands of invasive nutria have been removed from California waterways with 7,841 taken as of March, but experts warn that if the rodent reaches local wetlands (affecting Morro Bay estuary), our ecosystems could face serious harm as the spread appears purposeful from central Oregon.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chimney Rock Road near Lake Nacimiento is seeing construction of a permanent two-lane bridge that began April 28. Granite Construction+ the contractor is replacing a one-lane structure; motorists should expect delays, follow detour signs, and obey a 15-mph speed limit as work continues through winter.  KSBY-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Adventist Health Sierra Vista will host a free skin cancer screening on May 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its auditorium on Murray Ave in San Luis Obispo, where licensed dermatology providers will offer full-body exams (recognizing Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Melanoma Monday).  Paso Robles Daily News
