COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Effective May 4, Amtrak will add a daily roundtrip so that San Luis Obispo receives three Pacific Surfliner trips instead of two, with six daily trips to Goleta (providing more travel options during peak hours).  CalCoast News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal Poly alum Victor Glover and his Artemis II crew broke the record for the furthest distance from Earth at 252,756 miles on April 6 while aboard the Orion spacecraft, and they will return to Earth Friday, April 10.  Mustang News
  • Cal Poly’s ASI elections run from April 21 at 8 a.m. to April 23 at 8 p.m. Students are urged to vote for leaders who manage a $15.8 million budget and represent over 22,000 student voices—ensuring that student fees benefit campus services.  Mustang News
  • Retired superintendent Curt Dubost attended the recent grand opening of the new high school pool in Paso Robles, where a smaller yet improved facility replaces the old, inadequate pool. He noted that the updated pool will serve students and the community for decades.  Paso Robles Daily News
  • Cal Poly selected Suffolk (a construction firm from Boston) to manage its $1.2 billion modular student housing project that will add 3,600 new beds and renovate 1,200 existing beds. The first building for 500 students is set for fall, with a second for 700 slated for fall 2027.  CalCoast News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Poly’s Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Institute uses Simtable — a tool that models wildfire behavior on a topographic map — to train firefighters and educate locals on fire safety in San Luis Obispo. The tool shows wildfire spread and explains changes in fire rules from July 2025.  Mustang News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Paso Robles City Council will hear an appeal on Tuesday over the Ravine Water Park’s planned 'no splash' pool and hot tub as staff recommended rejecting the change requested by John Erskine (for Ranch and Coast Properties), and the council will decide whether to maintain the planning commission’s approval.  CalCoast News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The San Luis Obispo Wedding Expo will be held Sunday, Apr. 12 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Madonna Expo Center, where engaged couples can meet local professionals to compare pricing and packages (VIP ticket holders receive extra perks like a complimentary drink).  Paso Robles Daily News

  • Cal Poly Rodeo athletes (from multi-generation families) are honoring their legacy by competing in team roping and tie-down events today on campus. The tradition, passed down from parents and grandparents, underscores a strong local bond with rodeo culture.  Mustang News
  • Cal Poly Men's Tennis swept weekend matches at the Ronca Tennis Center by beating UC Davis 4 to 2 and UC San Diego 4 to 1 to remain unbeaten in Big West play. The Mustangs (3 to 0 in conference matches) will play away at UC Riverside on Thursday and UC Irvine on Friday.  Mustang News
