- ➤ At 6 a.m., Greek life members at Cal Poly volunteered at San Luis Obispo’s Ludwick Community Center for the Point in Time Count to help survey homeless people, and they also participated in a January night relay to promote safety while fulfilling required service hours that support local charities. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Cal Poly Mustang Band will perform at the Alaska Airlines Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco on Mar. 7 after a pre-parade concert on the Embarcadero at 3 p.m. The student-run group will play a three-song set (including “Yea Poly” and a Chinese pop piece with 'Ride High' intro). - ➤ Cal Poly hosted Bach Week from Jan. 22-24 with masterclasses and performances using historical instruments that celebrated Bach’s music — a long-standing campus tradition that united students, faculty and locals. Mustang News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cal Poly College Corps received a $6.9M grant from California Volunteers to fund student fellowships in education, climate action & food insecurity, boosting total funding to $20M and extending the program through the 2028–29 academic year; applications are open until March 15. Mustang News
- ➤ Cal Poly University Housing now requires a FAFSA for financial need exemptions and has eliminated appeals, leaving some first-year students uncertain about on-campus housing. The policy affects students in several colleges and is designed to offer a more consistent housing process. Mustang News
- ➤ Cal Poly installed Flock Safety license plate readers in March 2025 to monitor vehicles, and since then, students and staff have raised concerns about privacy as the system tracks car details each time a vehicle enters or exits campus. One student launched a petition (shared online) calling for contract review. Mustang News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Over 70 volunteers gathered at Johnson Open Space on Saturday, Feb. 7 to plant trees and fight climate change as part of ECOSLO’s drive to grow the urban forest. The nonprofit (ECOSLO) supports the city's goal of planting 10,000 trees by 2035. Mustang News

- ➤ Travelers on Highway 41 west of Atascadero will see one-way reversing traffic control from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, as crews remove a large fallen tree (drivers should allow extra time). Paso Robles Daily News
- ➤ Today, PG&E is hosting a virtual media briefing & partnering with the FTC and local law agencies to share tips on spotting utility scams and what to do if targeted during National Consumer Protection Week. KSBY-TV

- ➤ Cal Poly wrestlers, including freshman Christian Garcia, dropped 10 pounds in two days before a Feb. 7 match in Menlo Park. Coaches helped him cut weight and win at the Menlo College Oaks Open tournament + he now prepares for more competitions. Mustang News
- ➤ Cal Poly Beach Volleyball had a mixed performance at the Battle for LA on Saturday, losing 4-1 to USC and winning 5-0 against Concordia Irvine at Merle Norman Stadium.
